Rainbow safety tips

ECO Friendly

100% Natural Cedar & Redwood and Cypress Construction.
o Rainbow Play Systems has mandated to our suppliers to adhere to a major forest initiative.
o The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) calls for third party inspections of forestlands for sustain-ability and habitat use.
o Certification has been set up to certify mills to produce "Certified Timber."
o Our timber has to be approved to be harvested under an agreement reached in cooperation with scientists, environmental groups and foresters
o Our 'Eco Friendly' stance means that we ensure not to harm watersheds around streams, wildlife, soil erosion, and to ensure no one area is over-harvested.
o Cedar and redwood are naturally decay resistant, which means they do not have to be treated with possibly toxic chemicals

o Our mills will be providing us with a plentiful supply of timber on into perpetuity. We at Rainbow Play Systems are proud to be "green"

When purchasing a Rainbow Play System, you are making the environmentally correct choice. Rainbow Play Systems, Inc. is proud to be using timber, America's greatest renewable resource!

We have chosen cedar and redwood for the same reasons homeowners choose them for their decks and siding. They both rank the highest in dimensional stability among commercially harvested woods, which means they split less, warp less, twist less and shrink less. They also hold paint better, and are virtually free of sticky pitch pockets and resins.

Cedar and redwood are also naturally decay resistant, which means they do not have to be treated with possibly toxic chemicals to last for years outdoors. Our timber purchasers visit the sawmills several times a year to select the highest quality timber for your Rainbow Play System.

Safety

Exclusive Safety-Scoop Slide
Our curved "safety-scoop" end landing results in children exiting the slide in a sitting position, ready to stand... safer than ending up on the ground.

Angled Safety Ladders:
Angled ladders have a 60 degree angle for safe climb, even for toddlers.

Exclusive Triple Bracket System:
Vinyl coated brackets are used at the top of our swing A-Frame. The triple bracket system provides a secure mounting while allowing adjustment for un-level gardens.

Recessed Bolts:
Bolts are recessed in to the wood, or safety capped with acorn nuts to contribute to a safer and more attractive finish.

Vertical Safety Rails:
This exclusive design makes an excellent fort-like effect. By presenting the slats on our vertical rails perpendicular to the edge, the enclosure is made very strong, while allowing excellent visibility into the playset for parents.

Big Beam Construction:
Rainbow Play Systems was one of the first manufacturers to use large beam and heavy bolt-through construction for home use (residential) play equipment. Climbing frames and clubhouses are made from 4x4 and/or 4x6 pieces of wood which make for a safe and durable play set.

Extra Wide Ladders with Deck Level Top Rung:
Rainbow ladders are wide which makes it easier for the more advanced climber to pass next to other children - rather than climb over them! Rainbow ladders have a rung at the top which provides a smooth transition to the play deck after completing the climb.

Mountain Climbing Clip:
Rainbow swings are attached to the wood frame using Ductile Iron swing hangers and spring clips, similar to those used in mountaineering. The spring clip as well as being very robust, allows for quick and easy adjustment of the swing height for a safe, custom fit.

Surfaces for play equipment
For home use, play equipment can be built on:
· · Grass
· · Bark Chipping
· · Rubber Chipping
· · Rubber Matting
· · Wetpour
Play surfacing is not mandatory for home equipment and most people choose to build on grass. However, some customers find it hard to mow around the play set and find that the grass wears off in high traffic areas such as below the swings and bottom of the slide. Play surfacing solves these problems, and provides some protection in the case of falls. All surfaces have a maintenance requirement, and the initial cost of some of the products can be as high, or higher, than the cost of the play equipment itself.

Rainbow Play Systems are best built on bark or rubber chipping. We recommend that the play area extend to 2m beyond the perimeter of the play set in all directions. You can use some discretion; you will need the full 2m at the bottom of the slide, but you may not need it against the back of a tower.

Chipping
Bark Chipping is available at many different prices and quality. Between play barks, particle size can vary all the way down to "shredded" (which mulches relatively quickly), and wood content can vary all the way up to 100% - some low quality "barks" are in fact made Bark entirely of chipped wood.

We use and recommend a high quality play bark. This bark has a large particle size that resists mulching and gives superior impact absorption. It also has a low wood content. The exact depth to be laid depends on the material used and the fall height to be protected (normally the play set deck height). Typically, a 10cm layer protects from falls up to a height of about 2.5m.

Rubber Chipping
Rubber chipping is a new product that has some advantages over play bark - in particular it does not mulch and it has higher impact absorption. The material comes in a variety of earth tones and looks similar to natural bark, but it is heavier and lasts years longer. Rubberific mulch resists colour fading and doesn't rot or attract pets or insects. Although it costs more initially, it is less expensive ultimately because of its durability, and because a thinner layer is required for the same impact absorption. Typically a 10cm layer gives protection from falls from up to 3m

Rubber Matting
Many commercial playgrounds use rubber matting. This typically has good impact absorption, but it is relatively expensive, and many people feel that it is not as good an aesthetic complement to their garden as bark or rubber chipping. Also, because Rainbow Play Sets are freestanding, they are best installed on firm ground. The set should therefore be installed first and the rubber mats fitted around the set. The thickness of mat to be used depends on the specific product, and the fall height to be protected from. Typically, 8cm thickness will protect from falls from up to 2.5m.

Wetpour
Wetpour is a virtually seamless rubber surface. It is the most expensive solution, and it needs to be laid on an existing hard level surface such as concrete. Consequently, it is rarely used in domestic situations. Where this surface is used, the Rainbow Play Set needs to be erected prior to the surface being laid.
